Over the Summer, Upward Bound Catonsville embarked on a Social Justice in Education Journey as a part of my Book Club Class.
Ms. Tabu Winslow Morris, MBA, Program Coordinator at the Upward Bound Catonsville Program at the Community College of Baltimore County, designed and created this project. The main deliverable was to impact positive change for educational purposes in the Baltimore County Public High Schools, whose students participate in the Upward Bound Catonsville Program. The students were instructed to find solutions for the populations that represented 25% or less of their school’s population.
The backdrop of the Social Justice in Education project was the book, “The Hate U Give,” by Angie Thomas. The 2024 Summer Academy scholars were provided with a book and participated in several workshops that dealt with topics mentioned in the book. The students were introduced briefly to Project Management and Project Research. Ms. Morris is pleased with the self-directed project. The students took the initiative and reached out to their school peers, administrators, and teachers. This was the first Project tied to a Summer Reading Assignment in which Ms. Morris was the class facilitator and project sponsor. All solutions are in the students' voices and were their collective suggestions. The project ran the duration of the six-week Summer Academy Program.
A group of students, Gbemisola, Morgan, Sidney, and Nia, were selected to be on the project delivery team. These four worked with Ms. Morris for two weeks after Summer Academy to complete the finished product. I thank all our 2024 Summer Academy scholars for their enthusiasm and dedication.
