Professional Development: ReInvest In Yourself

What is an investment? The New Oxford American Dictionary states it is the action or process of investing money for profit or material result. So why invest in yourself? You are the only person that knows your actual value.

This past week I was at one of the best Human Resources Conferences sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management (#SHRM) in Las Vegas, NV. 20,000 attendees from all over the World. In every field of Human Resources (HR), you can imagine. This was the most significant in-person number of attendees SHRM has ever had. The conference was offered both in-person and virtual.

SHRM celebrated 75 years. Congratulations, SHRM!

Why is it so essential for us to reinvest in ourselves? Because you get to gain the knowledge you desire to know that meets your interest.

#SHRM23 did that for me.

Many attendees I met came because their employers paid for their trip and ticket to attend. The conference costs between $995 for members- $1495 virtually for non-members and $1,495 for members - $2,095 for non-members for in-person participation. That does not include airfare, food, hotel, and any other item you need. But when you reinvest in your professional development, it screams to everyone around you that this is important. You are serious.

Was this something easy for me to do? NO! It was costly. I worked 7 days a week on multiple jobs to afford to reinvest in me. During this year's journey, I had to forgo purchasing some things because I had to save for this trip. Guess what? I still used credit, and when I thought I could pay cash, my plans A, B, and C did not play out like I wanted. But nothing was stopping me. This was almost a year in the making.

In the middle of gearing up to attend, life happened. I moved from Towson, Maryland, to Middle River, Maryland, which was costly. But I still knew that this was important for my Professional Development. The knowledge that I needed to gain. I wanted to attend something I did not need to report back to anyone but myself.

Self-accountability is powerful.

When you wake for a session that starts at 7:30 AM in a time zone four or three hours behind yours, stay until 8 PM because the information or networking is that powerful. Not because you have to report back to your boss but because you are investing in yourself.

Knowledge is power.

Believe me, on day four, the time zone difference caught up to me. After the Janet Jackson concert that started at 8 PM Pacific Time Zone, I live in the Eastern Time Zone. That means the show began at 11 PM, my usual time. But it was worth it. Why? Because I had an experience with like-minded individuals who all came for the same reason even if their employer covered their trip. They came to relax and exhale before returning to the simple mundane job of giving their all to help somebody else solve their problems or assist others in achieving their goals.

This conference helped the professionals who are not thanked or always noticed for a job well-done gain insight on new topics, better understand issues they already appreciate, meet different individuals, gain a different view, and have fun doing it.

Why not reinvest in you?!

Whatever it may be, I challenge you this coming year to find a topic, industry, and field that light your fire. Spend some of your off time from your regular career and go and learn. It can be a conference, reading a new book, or learning a new skill for fun or your profession. Not because your job requires it but because you know your value and want to increase your knowledge.

Join the forever learning population.

Yes, I spent my vacation from another job attending a conference to reinvest in ME.

Try It!

It will help ignite your fire, especially if you feel professional burn-out, stagnant, unappreciated, unnoticed, undervalued, or bored with your work. Ignite your own fire. Reinvest in your own professional development (#PD). If all you gain is added personal value in acquiring the knowledge you did not know before, that is powerful.

Thank you!
