It is so essential in a world where nothing seems to matter anymore that families come back together and either start or revive some traditions. The good ones. Do you remember when everything was closed on Sunday? In those days, you could only attend worship and stop at a family member's home for dinner.
Back then, my late mom, who raised me, Carol Ann Brown, would host Sunday dinner and cook the family dinner for the holidays, especially News Year's Day. Anyone who wanted to stop by did. But her children and first cousins knew we were supposed to be in attendance. It helped us catch up on family drama and gossip. You found out who was pregnant and who was doing well in school. All the dirt was ditched. Most of which my mom already knew. It was all of the other family members who were just finding out.
This is what is missing in our family circles. A safe place to not be judged but loved. To hear the truth from people who genuinely care about you and do not mind you getting upset because you listened to the truth without demoralizing you. Where you can be yourself. Where you do not have to pretend. Where titles are checked at the door. Where you are just sister, brother, mom, dad, aunt, uncle, friend, cousin, and so on.
Where is that America where you can come and gather, hear the truth, be yourself, and not be judged but loved on?
Can we revive those traditions in #2023?!
Three years ago, I started it again with just my daughter and son-in-law. Every year, I pencil it on the calendar because nowadays, children have a choice. Back then, when my mom did it, you had no choice if you did not want to end up on her naughty list or in the dog house for a few months. That meant she had nothing to say to you for a while. Try going to Sunday dinner and eating, and mom acting like you was not there. She would feed you but had nothing else to say.
When you were no longer in the dog house, you were delighted. We need that type of love in our families again. That would help stop some of the violence we are seeing.
At least, I believe.
You had others you indeed were accountable to, and it made a difference.
We will probably never get back to stores being closed on Sundays. Which helped to break down family circles in America. But what we can do, is start or revive family traditions.
What tradition will you start or revive this year?
Why?
Because America needs it!
Happy New Year!
