If you are reading this message, I know you have heard about the Coronavirus. If not, you are truly living in a bubble. The Coronavirus started in China. It has impacted 46 States and the District of Columbia here in the United States of America (CDC World Coronavirus Map created by John Hopkins University). President Trump has declared a National Emergency in which allows localities and government agency to do things to help curve the outbreak. Many countries have put there entire country on lock down, ItalySpain, & China. Canada closed there border.

We are being told that the safest practice not to become sicken by the virus is to Social Distance our-self from others. What is Social Distancing? "Social distancing is a public health practice that aims to prevent sick people from coming in close contact with healthy people in order to reduce opportunities for disease transmission. It can include large-scale measures like canceling group events or closing public spaces, as well as individual decisions such as avoiding crowds" from John Hopkins University.

Companies all over the World is practicing Social Distancing. Some are encouraging tele- commuting. Tele-commuting is when you work from home. Schools are closed in most States in the United States for two weeks. Bars and Restaurants are closed or providing carry out services only.  On Sunday, most religious organizations had services online or by conference call. The President and CDC is asking us not to be in crowds of more then 10 people.

Starbucks announced that they are closing there sitting areas. To Go Only Model in the USA and Canada. WOW!

Marriott Hotels are getting ready to furlough tens of thousands of employee because of the negative impact of this virus.

Due to the ask for Social Distancing most sports events world wide has been cancelled or put on hold. The impact is in the millions. I am a sports junkie. It has been hard to see NCAA March Madness not happening. I never thought we wouldn't have a NBA Championship or the MLB delay the start of the season. A USA without sports. Look at the different types of playing fields from outdoors with baseball to indoors for basketball. However, not conducive for good social distancing for the fans that attend the events or the athletes that play the game. For their safety social distancing is important too.

I can say that I have worked in many different types of work spaces. There are some that adhere very well with the Social Distancing and some that do not. According to New Day Offices  , "there are four different types of employees.: Pioneers, Drivers, Guardians, and Integrators". We want their work spaces to make it more conducive to them being successful at their jobs.  In the on-boarding process depending on the candidate, work spaces can assist with recruitment. Getting the right person on board at the right time for your team or organization. That is why you should always give tours of the work space when making your final decision on the candidate you are going to offer a position to because that individual may decide to decline your job offer if the work space is not conducive to their work style. You can observe their reaction to their potential new work environment before they on board.

In this new era of social distancing, I bet more employers will create work spaces that will not only help in times like this and assist with optima job performance.  Think over the years what companies you have worked for that have had very good work spaces and that helped to propel your inter creative self.

I can think of a few places. that I enjoyed. I enjoyed the many facet work spaces the Houston Chronicle in Houston, Texas created for their employees. The HCC had all of the different types of work spaces mentioned by Wework for the different types of employees. It was an awesome place to be. It had gathering spaces for team meetings and conference rooms. It had private rooms for one individual associate. It was awesome. Plus, it was very sterile.

When I worked for The Maryland Department of Commerce, I had a private office instead of a cubicle like at the HCC. We did not have all of the different work spaces mentioned by the Wework article on types of work spaces. However, because each individual employee had their own office you did not have to interact with another colleague unless you wanted to or you needed to.

I truly believe going forward we will look at work spaces differently. We will consider Social Distancing as a means to a end for pandemics. We will consider it being a healthy way to keep our employees healthier during the flu seasons.  And for now, Social Distancing is our new norm.
