To all the
Furloughed employees who have paid into unemployment benefits insurance
you should qualify to withdraw your benefits at this time. It may not be enough
to pay all your bills; however, it will be some income coming in to your
home.
The first of my Golden Nugget suggestions I want to share
with you is to be careful that you do not over borrow funds. There are many
organizations (financial) that are providing loans for your pay check to cover
your bills while you are furloughed. My suggestion is to only borrow the amount
less the amount you are receiving from unemployment benefits.
Why? Because when
you receive your paychecks you will receive a nice note from Unemployment Benefits
Office in your State with the amount you must pay back. It is called an “OVER PAYMENT.”
Take my advance, pay it back immediately.
The next thing you
will receive is a nice reminder from the financial institution that loaned you
the furlough loan that you are now back to work and you need to repay your
debt. Do not get caught up with the fact that you received a wind fall of
funds.
Make sure you manage this money properly. Reminder that taxes will come out of your paycheck that will be paid to you for all the hours that you were furloughed. That could end up being a hefty amount of money. The more hours paid the more taxes come out of your paycheck except for in states such as Texas that do not pay employment taxes.

Next reminder, if
you are calling out sick that you will only receive pay if you have sick leave
time available. If you are on an improvement performance plan for missed time
from work, I would suggest if you must go to work, go. Unless, you are not
looking to stay with the Federal Government when this end. All performance measures
are in play, yes even during a furlough.
If you must go into
the office remember you are at work with your colleagues who share and understand
your frustration. Maybe, your colleagues who are not essential staff may bring
you in some goodies as a nice jester.
Look at the bright
side if you are furloughed and do not have to go into the office at least you
have some free paid time off to do all the things you wanted to do at home or
otherwise. Free time off with pay furloughed or not is awesome. Take it because
it doesn’t usually happen to often.
Just, remember when
it is all over the public is going to want what ever they need yesterday. We
probably will not have too much patience that you were not in the office for how
many days…. We will just want the job done correctly and right now. The
memories of the public will lapse, and it will be same as usually until the
next furlough.
In the meantime, if

Do some self-professional development. If at work. Sorry. Know that your
paycheck is coming as soon as they come to an agreement.
